Privacy Fence and Stone Wall Build in Downtown Traverse City

This downtown Traverse City property needed two things - structure along the street edge and real privacy in the yard. That combination is pretty common with older in-town lots. The space between the sidewalk and the home just didn't have any definition, and the yard had zero separation from the street. So we set out to solve both problems at once.

We used Old Town Wall block made locally by The Concrete Service to build the wall running along the property edge. Locally made block is worth calling out - it holds up well in northern Michigan winters, and using a product made right here in TC means we're supporting the community and getting quality materials that are made for this climate.

The natural stone steps tie the entry together cleanly. Two large, rough-cut bluestone slabs stacked as steps create a solid, grounded transition from the gravel area up to the fence gate. Natural stone like this doesn't fake it - it has real weight and texture that manufactured material can't replicate. It's the kind of detail that makes a space feel intentional.

The privacy fence wraps the yard and sits right on top of the wall, which gives the whole setup extra height without the fence posts needing to go deeper into unstable ground. It's a practical move that also looks sharp. The fresh cedar boards and the dark gray block work really well together - clean, structured, and built to last through years of Michigan weather.
